2022 Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival

Featured Artist

San Jose Taiko

Each year, the Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival honors a Featured Artist from its community of performers, artists, craftspeople, and curators that exemplify the culture and history of Japan. In past years, these have included Ikebana flower arrangers, Sumi-e painters, and Shiba Inu dog fanciers. This year the festival is pleased to welcome San Jose Taiko as the 2022 festival featured artist.

San Jose Taiko teaches, performs, and expands the taiko art form. For nearly 50 years, they have crafted innovative performances and provided comprehensive educational programs, empowering diverse voices and educating across cultures to build a more accepting and engaged world. From the heart of San Jose Japantown they forge a cultural impact equivalent to arts institutions with much greater resources by relying on a collaborative audience development and participation model based on community inclusion. Their dynamic presentations of contemporary American taiko, highlighting original music and featuring innovative collaborations, and their range of educational programs reach over 50,000 national audience members of all ages and ethnic backgrounds each year. “Taiko is our medium to create positive change in the world,” says Wisa Uemura, Executive Director of San Jose Taiko. “The universal appeal and accessibility of taiko transcend demographic and cultural boundaries, creating a gateway to understanding.”

San Jose Taiko will perform at the Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival on April 30, 2022.
